From agro-food waste to industrial materials: The new CSIC Pilot Plant at EDIBON

At EDIBON, we are proud to host the new CSIC pilot plant at our facilities in Móstoles, developed by the Institute of Catalysis and Petrochemistry (ICP-CSIC). This initiative represents a significant advancement in innovation and sustainability, allowing us to actively participate in a project that promotes the circular economy and the energy transition.

A Pilot Plant to Turn Waste into Resources

The plant, covering an area of 110 m², aims to convert biomass and agro-food waste into high-value industrial products. Thanks to this technology, the waste is transformed into:

  • High-purity cellulose, used in paper, textiles, sugars, and biofuels.
  • High-purity lignin, employed in resins, insulating materials, or as an alternative to graphite in batteries.
  • Furfural, a key chemical compound for the production of plastics, resins, and other industrial materials.

The process uses gamma-valerolactone (GVL), a green solvent that is almost entirely recovered, reducing environmental impact while ensuring the technical and economic feasibility of the process. The plant will be able to process up to two tons of biomass per year, with an estimated output of 500–1,000 kg of cellulose, 200–500 kg of lignin, and 100–300 kg of furfural.

Collaboration and Gratitude to CSIC

At EDIBON, we would like to thank CSIC for trusting our facilities to carry out this innovative project. Participating in this initiative demonstrates how research and innovation can generate sustainable, high-impact solutions for industry.

A Step Further Towards the Circular Economy

The plant is part of the BIORREFINA project, funded by the European Union’s Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, and is included in the CSIC’s PTI-TRANSENER network, which fosters collaboration between research and the industrial sector. This project reinforces the commitment to a more efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly production model.

At EDIBON, we remain committed to innovation, applied science, and technical education, offering our facilities as a benchmark space for the development of high-impact pilot projects.
